Arthur wasn’t in love with Vivi or Lewis: a Mystery Skulls theory.

Arthur was the odd one out amongst his group of friends, as instead of being interested in the supernatural he was horrified by it.

So it’s easy to surmise that the only reason he kept at it was because he wanted to stay close to his friends.

Then Vivi and Lewis start dating, and spending more time with eachother as couples do.

So Arthur is left as a hanger on, but can’t really leave because 

A. Vivi and Lewis are his friends and he doesn’t want to abandon them and

B. He’s their Group’s mechanic and is the one who owns the van, meaning that him leaving would leave them high and dry.

So he’s kinda stuck, doing something he doesn’t really like without the benefit that made him start doing it in the first place.

This plants a seed of resentment that over time grows, until the cave happens, with the thing that possessed him using his resentment and making him push Lewis to his death before Mystery rips off his possessed arm.

And after that thanks to hazy memories from pain and possession in his mind, Lewis seems to have disappeared without a trace, Vivi doesn’t seem to remember Lewis at all, and He himself lost an arm.

So he stays with Vivi and keeps doing the mystery thing while looking for Lewis everywhere they go.

Because that’s what friends do.
