Your Jewish library (personal, synagogue, classroom, JCC, anything) shouldn’t be just about straight, cis, white-passing, able-bodied Ashkenazi Jewish men. I know I’m preaching to the choir, but find books about Jews of Color, find books about non-Ashkenazi Jews, find books about Jews with disabilities or neurodivergency, find books about Jewish women, Jews who aren’t straight and cis. These books are all out there, and I will personally help you find them. (I’m not sure I know off-hand children’s books for all of these, but I bet we can find them together.)
Oh gosh! In general:
- MaNishtana’s Thoughts from a Unicorn or Ariel Samson: Freelance Rabbi (haven’t read the 2nd since it’s new but I trust him)
- I need more gay Jewish books in my life but Torah Queeries and this list are a great start
- Molly Yeh and Michael Twitty’s cookbooks (they have stories & narrative aspects and also Food!)
- T4 by Anne Clare Lezotte is a holocaust book, but the main character is Jewish, deaf, and (if I remember correctly) survives. I don’t remember it as shoah-porn but it has been a while.
- For kids books, PJ library recommends this list for diversity and this one for disabilities. And jumblr has been hyped about Queen of the Hanukkah Dosas
- In terms of books by and about women, these aren’t hard to find if you make any effort. The libraries I’m complaining about (a) are trying to shut out women’s voices or (b) haven’t gotten much of anything new since the 50s… If someone’s really struggling, I’d recommend Five Books of Miriam and The Red Tent as ones I’m surprised they haven’t already stubbed their toes on.
- There’s a couple more (one about the Jewish deaf community and another about gay teens) I’m blanking on titles of but will post if I remember.
Anyone have more suggestions?
