seriously. i had a priest try to tell me once that the reason why the LGBT community has such a high rate of mental illness is because that illness was a sign of disorder in our identities and “activities” – to him, our high rates of mental illness proved that being LGBT was a sin.

…instead of being a sign that the homo/bi/trans/queerphobia we are bombarded with is a sin. 

studies show that when LGBT+ individuals feel accepted and safe in their communities, when they are able to live openly as themselves, rates of mental illness and suicide attempts go waaaaay down. bigotry, not the identity itself, is what causes struggles with mental health.
