I was in 1st/2nd grade grade when the big Pokémon boom of the late 90s-early 00s happened. It was HUGE. Every kid was into it and we’d watch the show and play pretend and collect the cards and bring our game boys to school to trade Pokémon during recess. I was lucky to have supportive parents, but I remember how teachers and other adults would scoff and say how tired they were of Pokémon, how annoying and juvenile it was and how they couldn’t wait for us to “get over it already”. I might have been young, but I still remember how much these kinds of comments bummed me out. Why in the world are we being mean to little kids who like Fortnite
Why are you comparing pokemon to fortnite???
Because… Fortnite is very popular amongst children at the moment? And there are adults who dismiss it in the same way other adults did when Pokémon was big, calling it stupid, saying the dances are annoying, how much they can’t wait for the “fad to be over”, etc. It’s pretty much the same scenario.
I see people in the comments saying things like “it’s because they base their entire personality on it!” And fans of Pokemon didn’t? And Harry Potter? And fucking pogs when I was in grade school?
It’s actually an important development point because it’s the first time kids are developing an interest outside of what their parents have set up for
It’s something that they and their friends decided they like and it’s theirs in a way other interests haven’t been
I’ve also seen people saying “but the problem is that they are staying up until 3am to have battles!”
1. That’s a parenting issue not a “trend is bad” issue. My kid sometimes stays up past midnight reading if we don’t realise they didn’t put down their book when we said. You wouldn’t say that reading is bad thing would you? And honestly when we’ve caught Kiddo up late we feel its on us for not checking on them
2. If you try to tell me no kid played on their gameboy until 3am I will laugh in your face
Now my last two cents: my kid isn’t into fortnite (or major fads) but they are obsessed with Terraria and Minecraft and I know jackshit about either of those but it makes my kid happy to babble about it at me
And they know I don’t understand what they’re going on about but I smile and say “it’s so nice to hear about you having so much fun! I’m so happy it makes you so happy!”
I don’t have to “get it” and in some respects I shouldn’t try (see the their own thing stuff above) but goddamnit I’m not going to shit on my child for developing their own interests
