some musing on Barry’s character

Under appreciated Barry thing? He’s naturally pretty goddamn calculating.

I’ve seen a few takes that he was just flying by the seat of his blue blue pants for years but that’s kinda the opposite of what we see. He spends twelve years living in a cave, painstakingly tracking Lup, and the base. He has the patience to last years with just the memory of his emotional bonds and absolutely no contact from anyone. He may be on the verge of Losing It for over a decade but he still pulls through and gets shit done. 

In fact he’s so calculating it’s hard to tell when he’s completely lost it or if it’s part of The Plan. Was he really going to go at Lucretia with his bare hands in Reunion Tour? Or did he anticipate that Davenport would step in? Did he just make a split second decision to leave his flask with Davenport so he could have him drink it? 

This is reiterated in the graphic novel too! He’s been with these boys for half of one afternoon, he antagonizes Merle until he stabs himself and he saddles them with his job and skeddadles off to the bar.

….that being said I don’t think the Spooky Unstable Lich Stuff was an act. Dude is under a lot of pressure and he’s made out of emotions. Stands to reason he would be having a rough time. I think those years of loneliness really fucked with him. He’s not experiencing life as a human being anymore, just as a magic ghost.

Like of COURSE the boys don’t trust him! He’s spooky and cryptic! But that doesn’t even register with him and he’s almost completely unable to handle that rejection.
