Most of us know by now that white diamonds are “pure” diamonds made only of carbon, while yellow and blue diamonds have their color because of impurities. Pink diamonds, however, are also pure carbon. Their crystal lattice is bent funny, causing the light that refracts out of it to appear pink to us. The general consensus is that this is why Pink Diamond was so much smaller than the other diamonds; she was imperfect all the way through.
The rarest kind of diamond is a red diamond, which led a lot of folks to believe that, had Pink come out “like she was supposed to”, she would have been Red Diamond instead. This in turn led to the idea that the mysterious red gem in the teaser trailer was White’s second attempt at making a perfect fourth diamond.
I DO think the new gem is Red Diamond, but I DON’T think White created her.
Red and pink diamonds are very similar, so it’s only natural to note the similarities between the new gem (who I will call “Red”) and Pink. Both have childish appearences, with poofy shoulder pads and “little-girl” hairstyles. Red’s sinister laugh sounds very girlish as well, suggesting she, like Pink, has an immature personality. Red’s heart-shaped gem could mean she’s very emotional, as well. Our first glimpses of them are even in this ominous, geometric, quasi-silhouette shot.
“White made Red Diamond to replace Pink as the perfect fourth diamond”, however, doesn’t make sense. Red diamonds get their color the same way pink ones do: their crystal lattice is deformed. By this logic, a red diamond wouldn’t be much better than a pink one, and far from the perfection Homeworld demands. And with Homeworld’s idea that similar gems are largely interchangeable, White would likely expect Red to have not only the physical but also the behavioral “problems” that Pink did. If Homeworld really needed a fourth diamond, creating another white, blue, or yellow one would be a much smarter idea.
“White made Red to replace Pink so Blue would stop crying and do her goddamn job” is a little better. If that were the case, Red wouldn’t be doing any ruling anyway, since Blue (and possibly Yellow) would be very overprotective and smothering towards her. Her flaws wouldn’t matter nearly as much as Pink’s did, because she wouldn’t be in a position to mess anything up.
There’s one detail about Red that makes me think her origins have nothing to do with White Diamond at all: her gem is shaped like a heart. It’s a very different cut than the other diamonds’ gems, and Being Different is Bad, because Being Different Introduces Unknown Variables That Are Difficult To Control. This would be counterproductive to both the “ruler” and “replacement” scenarios.
But even if White decided “fuck it, I’ll make a radically different diamond anyway”, why would she choose a heart shape specifically? The symbol means nothing to gems, and I doubt such a detail would be added without meaning. And even if, against all odds, that was the case, why is Red’s gem on her chest, approximately where the human organ is, instead of on her hand or eye or literally any other place a gem could be? Is this supposed to be a coincidence as well?
That Red has a heart-shaped gem where a human heart would be suggests she was created not by other gems, but by humans.
Didn’t we all suspect the hole in Russia was the birthplace of a diamond?
Fans have wondered why humans haven’t attempted to use gem tech and monsters to their advantage, or at least document them. Sadie was able to take one down with a goddamn stick, how is it that nobody’s captured one for study? How is it that we see no sign of gem technology being used by humans, despite the fact that pieces of it are just laying around? How is it that not one military power has figured out how to use a chunk of gem to fucking, I don’t know, power a simple laser gun or something?
There is an entire planet of this stuff that the Crystal Gems are still cleaning up six thousand years later, it’s impossible for them to prevent something from slipping through the cracks. And yet we have no indication whatsoever that any humans other than the residents of Beach City are even aware that gem stuff exists, despite the fact that the town sustains itself through tourism and it is thus inevitable that outsiders will see these things!
There is some kind of bullfuckery going on here, and at this point I am extremely reluctant to attribute it to creator error.
Someone used gem tech from the kindergarten to incubate a red diamond. As a diamond, she’d have near-universal access to any functioning gem tech. No doubt she learned from it that a diamond’s purpose is to rule. And thus, in classic sci-fi horror fashion, she turned against her creator. And she has been ruling, quietly, for a very long time.
Long enough to snatch away what she deems hers from any human who might stumble across it. Long enough to silence anyone who gets too vocal about their discoveries. Long enough to turn gems into myths and conspiracy theories for the rest of the world.
Long enough to get bored of staying in the shadows.
