right so: hobbits are known, in the lotr canon, to be incredibly resilient & incorruptible. bilbo doesn’t get a concussion despite being hit by a flying rock. frodo manages to carry the ring across middle-earth. so: hobbits are tough nuggets and it takes a LOT to injure them.
the dwarves don’t know this. consider: bilbo loses his balance, slips and falls two hundred meters off the lonely mountain when they’re all looking for the keyhole.
there’s a long moment when the other dwarves are
