right so: hobbits are known, in the lotr canon, to be incredibly resilient & incorruptible. bilbo doesn’t get a concussion despite being hit by a flying rock. frodo manages to carry the ring across middle-earth. so: hobbits are tough nuggets and it takes a LOT to injure them. 

the dwarves don’t know this. consider: bilbo loses his balance, slips and falls two hundred meters off the lonely mountain when they’re all looking for the keyhole. 

there’s a long moment when the other dwarves are 

there’s a long moment—  a silent moment— and then the shouting begins. fili and kili bring out their climbing equipment and start estimating the distance. balin’s face is long and grim. thorin shouts bilbo’s name, loudly and woundedly. 

then, there’s a loud ‘I’M FINE’ from down in the crevace. bilbo climbs over the rock he fell beneath. ‘I THINK THE KEYHOLE IS UP THERE. ALSO CAN YOU THROW A ROPE DOWN’
