If you are gay and are sexually active you cannot donate blood.

When you donate blood there is a questionnaire that you have to fill out and some of the questions are very pointed, as in it will ask “have you had sex with man who has had sex with another man in the past 12months. ” I understand that gay men are at a higher risk for getting HIV but I don’t believe questions like are fair. I brought it up with the RN who basically said that there is no way around it. Even if you come in with clean results from an STI Scan. That question assumes that only gay men have anal sex and only they can transmit it, when in today’s society people have become a lot more sexually open and anyone can be having anal sex. There were other questions that were similarly pointed, however I can’t remember them word for word. This happened today and I was just frustrated that this is something that restricts people from donating blood. The question blatantly says that if you are gay and have sex, you cannot donate blood. This upsets me and is not fair.

I believe they actually changed these rules a few years ago. Very recently, but I believe MSM can give blood now.

Not true.

They only decreased the waiting time down to a year without sex for MSM donors.

Not-so-friendly reminder that Canadian Blood Services still have homophobic and transphobic policies.
