I’ve seen some people say ‘but they’re just trying to crack down on child porn!’
a: If that was all it was, the site would not be in this much of an uproar. The new guidelines specifically say all nsfw content, including ones that include two characters or people that are both over 18. Some people make their livelihood off of adult art that is only of adults, and tumblr may have most of their paying customers. Having this sprung on them with little notice is just a dick move. If you painted landscapes and had a site say ‘hey in a week we’re banning the color green’ you’d be pretty pissed. Trust me, if it was just getting rid of kiddie porn, 99% of the site would be all on board with this. (And btw, nothing is mentioned about getting rid of. Yknow. All the nazis.)
b: If you weren’t here when tumblr first turned on safe mode, it targeted e v e r y t h i n g. Any lgbt content no matter how fine it was (like an aesthetic board or a flag), pictures of pets, selfies, fully-clothed fanart, action figures. You know what it was bad at catching? Actual nsfw content. I saw someone who posted screenshots of disney afternoon shows get almost all their content flagged. The flagging system is terrible.
c: The purge is taking down tags that people use to discuss serious topics, like chronic pain, abuse, and surviving assault. They’re tags for a reason- so you can either blacklist it if you don’t like it, or go into the tag to find people to discuss it with. That option’s been completely taken away. (It also took down the ‘tumblr purge’ tag because can’t have people talking about what you did!)
